What Do You Say It Is?

Have you ever said to yourself, “being single is hard”? If you have, I can relate because I’ve said it several times over the past year. But today I was reading Deuteronomy 30:11-14 and it gave me a new perspective. It says,

“This command I am giving you today is not too difficult for you, and it is not beyond your reach. It is not kept in heaven, so distant that you must ask, ‘Who will go up to heaven and bring it down so we can hear it and obey?’ It is not kept beyond the sea, so far away that you must ask, ‘Who will cross the sea to bring it to us so we can hear it and obey?’ No, the message is very close at hand; it is on your lips and in your heart so that you can obey it.”

These verses refer to the commands God gives to His people for obeying Him. In chapter 28 He runs down a list of the blessings that come with obeying Him, that are filled with so much promise and goodness. In contrast, God also describes the curses that come when we disobey Him and they far outweigh the blessings. Truly there’s a big cost to pay for disobedience.

But in chapter 30, God’s mercy, forgiveness, and love shines through. He says even when we disobey Him, if we return back to Him and obey Him with all of our heart and soul, He will restore us. Isn’t that good news? Then when I read verses 11-14, I interpreted it to mean that obeying Him isn’t hard. It’s not something too difficult to do because it’s actually on our lips and in our hearts. To me, that applies to every area of our lives, including singleness.

We make things hard because of how we perceive it. But does it have to be? What if we believed that singleness was simple and beautiful? What if we saw it as a precious gift? It all boils down to how we choose to look at it. In any given situation, your life can be “half empty” or “half full”. You have a choice in how you view it. What do you say it is?
